Former Minister D. M. Jayaratne, who is one of the UPFA National List MPs was swon in as Prime Minister before President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday at Temple Trees. Jayaratne, one of the founder members of the SLFP ook over as Prime Minister from Ratnasiri Wickremanayake, but is likely to hold office only for a few months until President Rajapaksa takes his oaths for his second term in November.

With its impressive victory at yesterday’s re-polls at Kumburupiddy and Nawalapitiya in the Trincomalee and Kandy Districts respectively, the ruling United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) has obtained 4,846,386 votes (60.33 %) and 144 seats countrywide (127 on the district basis and 17 from the National List).
